Which of the following organic compounds polymerizes to form the polyester dacron?

  1. Propylene and para HO-(C6H4)-OH
  2. Benzoic acid and ethanol
  3. Terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol
  4. Benzoic acid and para HO-(C6H4)-OH

Answer

(3) Terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol

Solution

As per NCERT, Terylene or Dacron is the best known polyester. It is manufactured by heating a mixture of ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid at 420 to 460 K in the presence of zinc acetate–antimony trioxide catalyst.

n HOOC-C6H4-COOH + n HO-CH2-CH2-OH [ -OC-C6H4-COO-CH2-CH2-O- ]n + 2n H2O

∴ Dacron is formed from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol.
