In a face-centered cubic lattice, a unit cell is shared equally by how many unit cells?

  1. 2
  2. 4
  3. 6
  4. 8

Answer

(3) 6

Solution

A cubic unit cell has 6 faces, and each face is common to the unit cell and one neighbouring unit cell.

As per NCERT, in an fcc unit cell each atom at a face centre is shared between two adjacent unit cells, so only 12 of each such atom belongs to one unit cell.

⇒ Through its 6 face-centre atoms, a unit cell is shared equally with 6 neighbouring unit cells.
