Given below are two statements : In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- Both Statement I and Statement II are true
- Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- Statement I is true but Statement II is false
- Statement I is false but Statement II is true
Answer
(4) Statement I is false but Statement II is true
Solution
Statement I: 1,2,3-trihydroxypropane is glycerol (b.p. ≈ 563 K). It decomposes at or below its boiling point.
As per NCERT, glycerol is separated from spent-lye in the soap industry by distillation under reduced pressure, not by simple distillation.
∴ Statement I is false.
Statement II: an azeotrope is a mixture that boils at a constant temperature, and its liquid and vapour have the same composition.
⇒ repeated vaporisation–condensation does not change its composition, so fractional distillation cannot separate it.
∴ Statement II is true.
