Stroma in the chloroplasts of higher plants contains

  1. light-dependent reaction enzymes
  2. ribosomes
  3. chlorophyll
  4. light-independent reaction enzymes.

Answer

(4) light-independent reaction enzymes.

Solution

As per NCERT, the membrane system (grana, thylakoids) traps light energy and carries out the light reactions, i.e., synthesis of ATP and NADPH.

Chlorophyll and the light-reaction enzymes lie in the thylakoid membranes, not in the stroma.

In the stroma, enzymatic reactions synthesise sugar; these are the light-independent (dark) reactions.

The stroma is characteristically the site of the light-independent reaction enzymes. (It also has 70S ribosomes and DNA, but the enzymes of the dark reaction are its defining content.)

Photosynthesis in C4 plants is relatively less limited by atmospheric CO2 levels because

  1. effective pumping of CO2 into bundle sheath cells
  2. RuBisCo in C4 plants has higher affinity for CO2
  3. four carbon acids are the primary initial CO2 fixation products
  4. the primary fixation of CO2 is mediated via PEP carboxylase.
