In preparation of alkene from alcohol using Al2O3 which is the effective factor ?

  1. Porosity of Al2O3
  2. Temperature
  3. Concentration
  4. Surface area of Al2O3

Answer

(2) Temperature

Solution

With Al2O3 as the dehydrating agent, the product depends on the temperature:

2C2H5OH Al2O3, 523 K C2H5-O-C2H5 + H2O

C2H5OH Al2O3, 633 K CH2=CH2 + H2O

∴ Temperature is the effective factor: at the higher temperature (about 633 K) intramolecular dehydration gives the alkene.

Answer: (2)
