When phenol is treated with CHCl3 and NaOH, the product formed is

  1. benzaldehyde
  2. salicylaldehyde
  3. salicylic acid
  4. benzoic acid

Answer

(2) salicylaldehyde

Solution

This is the Reimer–Tiemann reaction.

As per NCERT, on treating phenol with chloroform in the presence of sodium hydroxide, a -CHO group is introduced at the ortho position of the benzene ring; the intermediate is hydrolysed in the presence of alkali to give salicylaldehyde (2-hydroxybenzaldehyde).
