In a normal pregnant woman, the amount of total gonadotropin activity was assessed. The result expected was :
- High levels of FSH and LH in uterus to stimulate endometrial thickening
- High level of circulating HCG to stimulate estrogen and progesterone synthesis
- High level of circulating FSH and LH in the uterus to stimulate implantation of the embryo
- High level of circulating HCG to stimulate endometrial thickening
Answer
(2) High level of circulating HCG to stimulate estrogen and progesterone synthesis
Solution
During pregnancy the placenta secretes hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), so the gonadotropin activity in the blood is mainly due to hCG; FSH and LH are kept low by high levels of estrogen and progesterone.
∵ hCG maintains the corpus luteum, which keeps on secreting estrogen and progesterone needed to maintain pregnancy.
∴ A high level of circulating hCG stimulating estrogen and progesterone synthesis is expected.
