Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 31 January (Evening Shift)

Given below are two statements: In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :

  1. Statement I is correct but statement II is incorrect
  2. Both statement I and statement II are incorrect
  3. Statement I is incorrect but statement II is correct
  4. Both statement I and statement II are correct

Answer

(1) Statement I is correct but statement II is incorrect

Solution

S8 + 12OH- 4S2- + 2S2O32- + 6H2O

O.N. of S: 0 → −2 (reduced) and 0 → +2 (oxidised) ⇒ disproportionation ⇒ Statement I correct

∵ In ClO4-, Cl is +7 (its highest O.N.), it cannot be oxidised further ⇒ no disproportionation ⇒ Statement II incorrect

Answer: (1)
