Which one of the following statements is incorrect about menstruation?

  1. The beginning of the cycle of menstruation is called menarche
  2. At menopause in the female, there is especially abrupt increase in gonadotropic hormones
  3. The menstrual fluid can easily clot
  4. During normal menstruation about 40 ml blood is lost

Answer

(3) The menstrual fluid can easily clot

Solution

As per NCERT, the first menstruation begins at puberty and is called menarche.

∵ At menopause the ovaries stop responding and ovarian hormones (oestrogen, progesterone) fall, the negative feedback is lost ⇒ the gonadotropins (FSH, LH) rise sharply.

Menstrual flow results from the breakdown of the endometrial lining and its blood vessels; normally about 40 ml of blood is lost.

∵ Menstrual fluid contains fibrinolysin (plasmin), the blood in it does not clot.

∴ The statement "The menstrual fluid can easily clot" is incorrect.
