Which one of the following ions is the most stable in aqueous solution? (At. No. Ti = 22, V = 23, Cr = 24, Mn = 25)
- V3+
- Ti3+
- Mn3+
- Cr3+
Answer
(4) Cr3+
Solution
Configurations: Ti3+: 3d1, V3+: 3d2, Cr3+: 3d3, Mn3+: 3d4
Ti3+ and V3+ are easily oxidised (reducing ions) to higher, more stable states.
Mn3+: E (Mn3+/Mn2+) = +1.57 V ⇒ strongly oxidising; it gains an electron to give the stable d5 Mn2+ and disproportionates in water.
Cr3+: E (Cr3+/Cr2+) = -0.41 V ⇒ Cr2+ is reducing and changes to Cr3+.
As per NCERT, Cr3+ (d3) has a half-filled t2g level in water, which gives it extra stability.
∴ Cr3+ is the most stable ion in aqueous solution.
