The temperature of a gas is -50 . To what temperature the gas should be heated so that the rms speed is increased by 3 times?

  1. 3295
  2. 3097 K
  3. 223 K
  4. 669

Answer

(1) 3295

Solution

vrms = 3RTM vrms T

Increased by 3 times: increase = 3v, so the new speed v' = v + 3v = 4v

T'T = ( v'v )2 = 16

T = -50 + 273 = 223 K

T' = 16 223 = 3568 K

= 3568 - 273 = 3295
