1
Glycolate induces opening of stomata in
- presence of oxygen
- low CO2 concentration
- high CO2
- CO2 absent
Answer
(2) low CO2 concentration
Solution
Glycolate is formed in the chloroplasts of guard cells when the CO2 concentration is low (RuBisCO acts as an oxygenase).
Its metabolism produces ATP and raises the osmotic concentration of guard cells, so water enters them and the stomata open (Zelitch's glycolate theory).
∴ Glycolate induces opening of stomata in low CO2 concentration.
