Which one of the following compounds is not a protonic acid?

  1. B(OH)3
  2. PO(OH)3
  3. SO(OH)2
  4. SO2(OH)2

Answer

(1) B(OH)3

Solution

PO(OH)3 (H3PO4), SO(OH)2 (H2SO3) and SO2(OH)2 (H2SO4) release H+ from their O-H groups ⇒ protonic acids.

As per NCERT, boric acid is a weak monobasic acid; it is not a protonic acid but acts as a Lewis acid by accepting a hydroxyl ion:

B(OH)3 + 2HOH [B(OH)4]- + H3O+

∴ B(OH)3 is not a protonic acid.
