A block of mass m is placed on a smooth inclined wedge ABC of inclination as shown in the figure. The wedge is given an acceleration 'a' towards the right. The relation between a and for the block to remain stationary on the wedge is [figure]

  1. a = gcosec
  2. a = g
  3. a = g
  4. a = g

Answer

(4) a = g

Solution

In the frame of the wedge, a pseudo force ma acts on the block towards the left (opposite to the acceleration of the wedge).

The incline face AB slopes down towards B, so along the incline:

component of gravity down the incline = mg

component of pseudo force up the incline = ma

For the block to remain at rest on the smooth surface:

ma = mg

a = g
