A ball is thrown vertically downwards from a height of 20 m with an initial velocity v0. It collides with the ground, loses 50 percent of its energy in collision and rebounds to the same height. The initial velocity v0 is (Take g = 10 m s-2)
- 28 m s-1
- 10 m s-1
- 14 m s-1
- 20 m s-1
Answer
(4) 20 m s-1
Solution
To rise again to 20 m, energy just after the collision = mgh = m 10 20 = 200m
∵ 50% of the energy is lost in the collision, energy just before it = 2 200m = 400m
Energy just before collision = 12mv02 + mgh
400m = 12mv02 + 200m
v02 = 400
∴ v0 = 20 m s-1
