Compound A, C8H10O, is found to react with NaOI (produced by reacting Y with NaOH) and yields a yellow precipitate with characteristic smell. A and Y are respectively
- [figure] and I2

Answer
(3) [figure] and I2
Solution
NaOI is formed from iodine and alkali: I2 + 2NaOH NaOI + NaI + H2O ⇒ Y = I2.
The yellow precipitate with a characteristic smell is iodoform, CHI3.
As per NCERT, the iodoform test is given by compounds with a CH3CO- group or a CH3CH(OH)- group (which NaOI oxidises to CH3CO-).
Only 1-phenylethanol, C6H5CH(OH)CH3 ( C8H10O), has the CH3CH(OH)- group:
C6H5CH(OH)CH3 NaOI C6H5COCH3 NaOI C6H5COONa + CHI3
