Which of the following compounds can form a zwitter ion?

  1. Aniline
  2. Acetanilide
  3. Benzoic acid
  4. Glycine

Answer

(4) Glycine

Solution

A zwitter ion needs both an acidic group and a basic group in the same molecule.

As per NCERT, in aqueous solution the carboxyl group of an amino acid loses a proton and the amino group accepts a proton, giving a dipolar ion (zwitter ion).

Glycine: H2N-CH2-COOH H3 N-CH2-COO

Aniline (only basic), acetanilide (neither) and benzoic acid (only acidic) cannot form a zwitter ion.
