One of the legal methods of birth control is :

  1. abortion by taking an appropriate medicine
  2. by a premature ejaculation during coitus
  3. by abstaining from coitus from day 10 to 17 of the menstrual cycle
  4. by having coitus at the time of day break

Answer

(1) abortion by taking an appropriate medicine

Solution

As per NCERT, intentional or voluntary termination of pregnancy before full term is called medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) or induced abortion.

∵ The Government of India legalised MTP in 1971 (MTP Act) with strict conditions, to check illegal abortions and to help reduce population.

⇒ Abortion by taking an appropriate medicine under medical supervision (MTP, safe in the first trimester) is a legal method of birth control.

Options (2), (3) and (4) are not recognised/reliable methods (and abstinence on days 10 to 17 is the natural periodic abstinence method, not a legal provision).

∴ Abortion by an appropriate medicine is the legal method.
