Given below are two statements : One is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R: In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A.
  2. A is true but R is false.
  3. A is false but R is true.
  4. Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

Answer

(4) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

Solution

In glycolysis, ATP is consumed at two steps.

Step 1: glucose is phosphorylated to glucose-6-phosphate by hexokinase, using one ATP.

Step 2: fructose-6-phosphate is phosphorylated to fructose-1,6-bisphosphate by phosphofructokinase, using the second ATP.

Thus A is true and R correctly explains A.
