Given below are two statements : In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- Statement I is true but Statement II is false
- Both Statement I and Statement II are true
- Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- Statement I is false but Statement II is true
Answer
(1) Statement I is true but Statement II is false
Solution
As per NCERT, ionization enthalpies ( kJ mol-1):
Cr: iH1 = 653, iH2 = 1592, iH3 = 2987
Mn: iH1 = 717, iH2 = 1509, iH3 = 3248
Statement I: 653 < 717; Mn (3d5 4s2) loses an electron from a filled 4s orbital of a stable configuration. Statement I is true.
Statement II: iH2 of Cr > Mn (Cr+ is 3d5, stable), but iH3 of Cr < Mn ( Mn2+ is the stable 3d5, so removing the third electron from Mn is harder). Statement II is false.
Answer: (1)
