Which one of the following species does not exist under normal conditions?

  1. Be2+
  2. Be2
  3. B2
  4. Li2

Answer

(2) Be2

Solution

Bond order = 12(Nb - Na)

Be2 (8 electrons): 1s2 * 1s2 2s2 * 2s2

⇒ Bond order = 12(4 - 4) = 0

As per NCERT, a zero bond order means Be2 molecule is unstable and does not exist.

Be2+ (B.O. = 0.5), B2 (B.O. = 1) and Li2 (B.O. = 1) have positive bond orders and can exist.

Answer: (2)
