Which one of the following contains the largest quantity of extracellular material ?

  1. Stratified epithelium
  2. Myelinated nerve fibres
  3. Striated muscle
  4. Areolar tissue

Answer

(4) Areolar tissue

Solution

As per NCERT, epithelial tissue has compactly packed cells with little intercellular matrix, and muscle and neural tissues are also made mainly of cells.

∵ Connective tissues (except blood) have cells that secrete fibres of collagen or elastin and a modified polysaccharide ground substance, which together form the matrix (extracellular material).

Areolar tissue (loose connective tissue) has fibroblasts, macrophages and mast cells loosely arranged in a semi-fluid ground substance with fibres.

∴ Areolar tissue contains the largest quantity of extracellular material.
