What is the fate of a piece of DNA carrying only gene of interest which is transferred into an alien organism? Choose the correct answer from the options given below:

  1. A and B only
  2. D and E only
  3. B and C only
  4. A and E only

Answer

(3) B and C only

Solution

A piece of DNA carrying only the gene of interest has no origin of replication, so it cannot multiply on its own in the progeny cells (A and E are wrong).

It may get integrated into the genome of the recipient (B), and then it may multiply and be inherited along with the host DNA (C).

D is wrong because, once integrated, the alien DNA becomes a part of the chromosome.

Hence B and C are correct.

Answer: (3)
