The correct sequence of spermatogenetic stages leading to the formation of sperms in a mature human testis is:

  1. spermatocyte - spermatogonia - spermatid - sperms
  2. spermatogonia - spermatid - spermatocyte - sperms
  3. spermatid - spermatocyte - spermatogonia - sperms
  4. spermatogonia - spermatocyte - spermatid - sperms

Answer

(4) spermatogonia - spermatocyte - spermatid - sperms

Solution

As per NCERT, spermatogonia (2n) multiply by mitosis; some of them grow into primary spermatocytes (2n).

⇒ Primary spermatocyte → (meiosis I) → secondary spermatocytes (n) → (meiosis II) → spermatids (n).

⇒ Spermatids are transformed into spermatozoa (sperms) by spermiogenesis.

∴ Sequence: spermatogonia → spermatocyte → spermatid → sperms.
