A rod of length 5 L is bent at right angle keeping one side length as 2 L. [figure] The position of the centre of mass of the system : (Consider L = 10 cm)

  1. 4 i + 9 j
  2. 2 i + 3 j
  3. 5 i + 8 j
  4. 3 i + 7 j

Answer

(1) 4 i + 9 j

Solution

The rod is uniform, so mass ∝ length. Vertical part: length 3L along the y-axis, centre at (0, 3L2 ); horizontal part: length 2L along the x-axis, centre at (L, 0).

xcm = 3L(0) + 2L(L)5L = 2L5 = 2(10)5 = 4 cm

ycm = 3L ( 3L2 ) + 2L(0)5L = 9L10 = 9 cm

rcm = 4 i + 9 j (in cm)

Answer: (1)
