A, B and C are disc, solid sphere and spherical shell respectively with same radii and masses. These masses are placed as shown in figure. [figure] The moment of inertia of the given system about PQ axis is x15I, where I is the moment of inertia of the disc about its diameter. The value of x is .

Answer

199

Solution

Let each body have mass M and radius R. PQ is a diameter of disc A and touches B and C, whose centres are at distance R from PQ.

Disc A (about its diameter): IA = MR24 = I

Solid sphere B (parallel axis theorem): IB = 25MR2 + MR2 = 75MR2

Spherical shell C: IC = 23MR2 + MR2 = 53MR2

IPQ = MR2 ( 14 + 75 + 53 ) = 19960MR2

∵ MR2 = 4I:

IPQ = 19960 4I = 19915I

∴ x = 199

Answer: 199
