A strong base can abstract an α-hydrogen from

  1. ketone
  2. alkane
  3. alkene
  4. amine

Answer

(1) ketone

Solution

As per NCERT, the α-hydrogens of aldehydes and ketones are acidic because of the strong electron-withdrawing effect of the carbonyl group and the resonance stabilisation of the conjugate base (enolate ion).

R- O \|C-CH3 B- R- O \|C- CH2

An alkane, an alkene or an amine has no such activating group, so its α-hydrogen is not removed by a base.

A strong base abstracts an α-hydrogen from a ketone.
