The product formed in Aldol condensation is

  1. a beta-hydroxy aldehyde or a beta-hydroxy ketone
  2. an alpha-hydroxy aldehyde or ketone
  3. an alpha, beta unsaturated ester
  4. a beta-hydroxy acid.

Answer

(1) a beta-hydroxy aldehyde or a beta-hydroxy ketone

Solution

As per NCERT, aldehydes and ketones having at least one α-hydrogen react in the presence of dilute alkali to form β-hydroxy aldehydes (aldol) or β-hydroxy ketones (ketol).

2CH3CHO dil. NaOH CH3- OH |CH-CH2-CHO

⇒ The aldol has –OH on the β-carbon; on heating it loses water to give an α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compound.

∴ The product is a β-hydroxy aldehyde or a β-hydroxy ketone.
