ABO blood grouping is controlled by gene I which has three alleles and shows co-dominance. There are six genotypes. How many phenotypes in all are possible -
- five
- four
- three
- six
Answer
(2) four
Solution
Gene I has three alleles: IA, IB and i.
⇒ Six genotypes: IAIA, IAi, IBIB, IBi, IAIB and ii.
∵ IA and IB are dominant over i, and co-dominant with each other,
∴ phenotypes: A (IAIA, IAi), B (IBIB, IBi), AB (IAIB) and O (ii).
As per NCERT, there are six genotypes and four phenotypes of the human ABO blood types.
