Right option for the number of tetrahedral and octahedral voids in hexagonal primitive unit cell are :

  1. 12, 6
  2. 8, 4
  3. 6, 12
  4. 2, 1

Answer

(1) 12, 6

Solution

Hexagonal (hcp) unit cell: 12 corner atoms, 2 face-centre atoms and 3 atoms inside.

Effective number of atoms N = 12 16 + 2 12 + 3 = 6

Number of tetrahedral voids = 2N and number of octahedral voids = N

Tetrahedral voids = 2 6 = 12, octahedral voids = 6

Answer: (1)
