ABC is an equilateral triangle with O as its centre. F1, F2 and F3 represent three forces acting along the sides AB, BC and AC respectively. If the total torque about O is zero then magnitude of F3 is [figure]

  1. F1 + F2
  2. F1 - F2
  3. F1 + F22
  4. 2(F1 + F2)

Answer

(1) F1 + F2

Solution

O is the centre, so the perpendicular distance of O from every side is the same, say r.

Torque of each force about O = F r

F1 (along A → B) and F2 (along B → C) both turn anticlockwise about O, while F3 (along A → C) turns clockwise.

Net torque about O is zero:

F3 r = F1 r + F2 r

F3 = F1 + F2

Answer: (1)
