Transformation was discovered by :

  1. Griffith
  2. Watson and Crick
  3. Hershey and Chase
  4. Meselson and Stahl

Answer

(1) Griffith

Solution

As per NCERT, in 1928 Frederick Griffith, in a series of experiments with Streptococcus pneumoniae, saw a miraculous transformation in the bacteria: heat-killed S strain converted live R strain bacteria into virulent S strain.

⇒ He concluded that the R strain bacteria had been transformed by some 'transforming principle' from the heat-killed S strain.

∴ Transformation was discovered by Griffith. (Watson and Crick – double helix model; Hershey and Chase – DNA is the genetic material; Meselson and Stahl – semiconservative replication.)
