Given below are two statements : In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  2. Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  3. Statement I is false but Statement II is true
  4. Both Statement I and Statement II are false

Answer

(2) Statement I is true but Statement II is false

Solution

Henry's law: p = KH x

Statement I: For an ideally dilute solution, p varies linearly with x, so KH (the slope) does not change with concentration. True.

Statement II: KH is a function of the nature of the gas, the nature of the solvent and the temperature. The same gas has different KH values in different solvents (its solubility differs from solvent to solvent). False.

Answer: (2)

A substance 'X' (1.5 g) dissolved in 150 g of a solvent 'Y' (molar mass = 300 g mol-1) led to an elevation of the boiling point by 0.5 K. The relative lowering in the vapour pressure of the solvent 'Y' is 10-2. (nearest integer) [Given: Kb of the solvent = 5.0 K kg mol-1] Assume the solution to be dilute and no association or dissociation of X takes place in solution.
