A series LCR circuit is connected to an ac voltage source. When L is removed from the circuit, the phase difference between current and voltage is 3. If instead C is removed from the circuit, the phase difference is again 3 between current and voltage. The power factor of the circuit is :

  1. 0.5
  2. 1.0
  3. -1.0
  4. zero

Answer

(2) 1.0

Solution

With L removed (RC circuit): 3 = XCR

With C removed (RL circuit): 3 = XLR

XL = XC (resonance)

Z = R2 + (XL - XC)2 = R

Power factor, = RZ = 1

Answer: (2)
