A data consists of 20 observations x1, x2, , x20. If i=120 (xi+5 )2=2500 and i=120 (xi-5 )2=100, then the ratio of mean to standard deviation of this data is :

  1. 2 : 1
  2. 3 : 1
  3. 3 : 2
  4. 4 : 1

Answer

(2) 3 : 1

Solution

(xi+5 )2= xi2+10 xi+20 25=2500

xi2+10 xi=2000 … (i)

(xi-5 )2= xi2-10 xi+500=100

xi2-10 xi=-400 … (ii)

(i) - (ii) : 20 xi=2400 xi=120

Mean x= 12020=6

(i) + (ii) : 2 xi2=1600 xi2=800

Variance 2= xi220- x2=40-36=4 =2

Mean : S.D. =6 : 2=3 : 1

Answer: (2)
