Consider that the coordinating atoms of the ligands in cis-[Co(NH3)4Cl2]Cl and mer-[Co(NH3)3Cl3] octahedral complexes are at the vertices of an octahedron. The sum of total number of the triangular faces in both the complexes having one N atom and two Cl atoms at their corners is .

Answer

6

Solution

Each face of an octahedron has one vertex from each axis pair ( x, y, z); 8 faces in all.

cis-[Co(NH3)4Cl2]+: the two Cl (say +x, +y) share one edge, which belongs to 2 faces; the third vertex ( z) is N in both. Count = 2.

mer-[Co(NH3)3Cl3]: Cl at +x, -x, +y; N at -y, +z, -z.

Faces with 2 Cl + 1 N: ( x Cl) and (+y Cl) and ( z N): 2 2=4 (choosing -y gives only one Cl).

Total =2+4=6

Answer: 6
