A person is having problems with calcium and phosphorus metabolism in his body. Which one of the following glands may not be functioning properly?
- Parotid
- Pancreas
- Thyroid
- Parathyroid
Answer
(4) Parathyroid
Solution
As per NCERT, the parathyroid glands secrete parathyroid hormone (PTH), which increases blood Ca2+ level.
PTH stimulates bone resorption, reabsorption of Ca2+ by renal tubules and absorption of Ca2+ from digested food; it also increases excretion of phosphate.
∴ A problem in calcium and phosphorus metabolism points to the parathyroid gland.
