Consider the following processes : array|l|c| & H (kJ/mol) \ 12A B & +150 \ 3B 2C + D & -125 \ E + A 2D & +350 \ array For B + D E + 2C, H will be

  1. 525 kJ/mol
  2. -175 kJ/mol
  3. -325 kJ/mol
  4. 325 kJ/mol

Answer

(2) -175 kJ/mol

Solution

Using Hess's law, combine the given equations to get B + D E + 2C.

Multiply (i) by 2: A 2B ; H = +300 kJ/mol

Reverse (iii): 2D E + A ; H = -350 kJ/mol

Take (ii) as such: 3B 2C + D ; H = -125 kJ/mol

Adding: A + 2D + 3B 2B + E + A + 2C + D

⇒ B + D E + 2C

H = 300 - 350 - 125

= -175 kJ/mol

Answer: (2)
