An aqueous solution is 1.00 molal in KI. Which change will cause the vapour pressure of the solution to increase?

  1. Addition of NaCl
  2. Addition of Na2SO4
  3. Addition of 1.00 molal KI
  4. Addition of water

Answer

(4) Addition of water

Solution

Lowering of vapour pressure is proportional to the number of solute particles (mole fraction of solute).

Adding NaCl or Na2SO4 increases the solute particles vapour pressure decreases further.

Adding 1.00 molal KI keeps the concentration the same no change.

Adding water dilutes the solution mole fraction of solvent increases vapour pressure increases (p = x1 p1 ).
