Persons with 'AB' blood group are called as "Universal recipients". This is due to :
- Absence of antibodies, anti-A and anti-B, in plasma
- Absence of antigens A and B on the surface of RBCs
- Absence of antigens A and B in plasma
- Presence of antibodies, anti-A and anti-B, on RBCs
Answer
(1) Absence of antibodies, anti-A and anti-B, in plasma
Solution
As per NCERT, persons with blood group AB have both antigens A and B on the surface of RBCs, but no antibodies (neither anti-A nor anti-B) in their plasma.
∵ The plasma has no antibody to react with donated RBCs, AB persons can accept blood of any ABO group.
∴ They are called universal recipients.
