The population of an insect species shows an explosive increase in numbers during rainy season followed by its disappearance at the end of the season. What does this show ?
- The food plants mature and die at the end of the rainy season
- The population of its predators increases enormously
- Its population growth curve is of J-type
- S-shaped or sigmoid growth of this insect
Answer
(3) Its population growth curve is of J-type
Solution
As per NCERT, when resources in the habitat are unlimited, a population grows exponentially, dNdt = rN, and the plot of N against time gives a J-shaped curve.
⇒ In the rainy season, food and favourable conditions are plentiful, so the insect population increases explosively (exponentially) without levelling off.
∵ At the end of the season the population crashes suddenly instead of reaching a stable carrying capacity K (as in an S-shaped, logistic curve).
∴ The population growth curve is of J-type.
