Which of the following properties will change when system containing solution 1 will become solution 2 ? [figure]

  1. Molar heat capacity
  2. Concentration
  3. Gibbs free energy
  4. Density

Answer

(3) Gibbs free energy

Solution

Solution 1: 10 mol of x in 10 L concentration = 1010 = 1 mol L-1

Solution 2: 1 L of solution 1 contains 1 mol of x; adding 1 mol of x and 1 L of water gives 2 mol of x in 2 L

concentration = 22 = 1 mol L-1 (same composition as solution 1)

Concentration, density and molar heat capacity are intensive properties: they depend only on the composition, which is unchanged.

Gibbs free energy is an extensive property: it depends on the amount of the system, which changes (about 10 L 2 L).

Gibbs free energy changes.

Answer: (3)
