Given below are two statements: In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  2. Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  3. Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  4. Statement I is false but Statement II is true

Answer

(3) Both Statement I and Statement II are true

Solution

Statement I:

At the melting point, H2O(s) H2O(l) is in equilibrium. Heat supplied is used as the enthalpy of fusion ( fusH = 6.00 kJ mol-1 at 273 K) to convert ice into water.

Temperature stays at 273 K till the whole ice melts. Statement I is true.

Statement II:

The absorbed heat is used only to overcome the intermolecular forces (hydrogen bonds) holding the molecules in the ice lattice.

Temperature does not change, the average kinetic energy of the molecules does not increase.

Statement II is true (and explains Statement I).

Answer: (3)
