The molecular weight of U is .

Answer

93018

Solution

Monomers (from the previous question): [figure] (Q, M = 104) and [figure] (R, M = 118)

Each –OH of one hydroxy acid forms an ester with the –COOH of the next, losing H2O, e.g.

[figure] + [figure] -H2O [figure]

U is one linear polyester (PHBV type) of 1000 monomer units: an acyclic chain of 1000 units has 999 ester links, so 999 H2O are lost.

M(U) = 500 104 + 500 118 - 999 18

= 52000 + 59000 - 17982 = 93018

Answer: 93018
