The monomer (X) involved in the synthesis of Nylon 6,6 gives positive carbylamine test. If 10 moles of X are analyzed using Dumas method, the amount (in grams) of nitrogen gas evolved is . Use: Atomic mass of N (in amu) = 14
Answer
280
Solution
Nylon 6,6 is made from adipic acid and hexamethylenediamine. Only the diamine H2N(CH2)6NH2 (a 1° amine) gives the carbylamine test, so X = hexamethylenediamine.
Each molecule has 2 N atoms, and Dumas method converts all N to N2: 1 mol X gives 1 mol N2.
10 mol X gives 10 mol N2 = 10 × 28 = 280 g
