Test tube baby means a baby born when

  1. The ovum is fertilised externally and thereafter implanted in the uterus
  2. It is developed in a test tube
  3. It is developed through tissue culture method
  4. It develops from a non-fertilized egg

Answer

(1) The ovum is fertilised externally and thereafter implanted in the uterus

Solution

As per NCERT, in in vitro fertilisation (IVF), ova from the wife/donor and sperm from the husband/donor are made to fuse in the laboratory under simulated conditions; the zygote or early embryo is then transferred into the fallopian tube (ZIFT) or uterus (IUT) to complete its development.

∴ This popular 'test tube baby' programme means external fertilisation followed by implantation in the uterus — the baby itself does not develop in a test tube.
