Given below are two statements: In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:

  1. Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  2. Statement I is false but Statement II is true
  3. Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  4. Both Statement I and Statement II are false

Answer

(4) Both Statement I and Statement II are false

Solution

Statement I: Failure of segregation of chromatids results in the gain or loss of one or more chromosomes (not a whole set); this is aneuploidy. Gain of a whole set is polyploidy. So Statement I is false.

Statement II: Failure of cytokinesis after telophase results in an increase in a whole set of chromosomes, i.e. polyploidy, not the gain or loss of a single chromosome. So Statement II is false.
