For the given circuit, the input digital signals are applied at the terminals A, B and C. What would be the output at the terminal y? [figure]

  1. [figure]
  2. [figure]
  3. [figure]
  4. [figure]

Answer

(3) [figure]

Solution

The upper gate is AND (inputs A, B) and the lower gate is NAND (inputs B, C); both outputs go to an OR gate.

y = A B + B C

From the waveforms, B and C are never high (5 V) together:

Before t2 and after t4: B = 0

Between t2 and t4: C = 0

B C = 0 at all times B C = 1 at all times.

y = A B + 1 = 1 (5 V) throughout.

The output y is a constant 5 V.
