Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 8 April (Evening Shift)

Least count of a vernier caliper is 120 N cm. The value of one division on the main scale is 1 mm. Then the number of divisions of main scale that coincide with N divisions of vernier scale is :

  1. ( 2N - 12N )
  2. ( 2N - 120N )
  3. (2N - 1)
  4. ( 2N - 12 )

Answer

(4) ( 2N - 12 )

Solution

LC = 120N cm = 12N mm and 1 MSD = 1 mm

Let x MSD coincide with N VSD ⇒ 1 VSD = xN mm

LC = 1 MSD − 1 VSD

12N = 1 - xN

x = N - 12 = 2N - 12

Answer: (4)
