How does steroid hormone influence the cellular activities?

  1. Activating cyclic AMP located on the cell membrane
  2. Using aquaporin channels as second messenger
  3. Changing the permeability of the cell membrane
  4. Binding to DNA and forming a gene-hormone complex

Answer

(4) Binding to DNA and forming a gene-hormone complex

Solution

Steroid hormones are lipid soluble, so they cross the cell membrane and bind to intracellular (nuclear) receptors.

⇒ As per NCERT, hormones which interact with intracellular receptors (e.g., steroid hormones, iodothyronines) mostly regulate gene expression or chromosome function by the interaction of the hormone-receptor complex with the genome.

∵ cAMP as second messenger is used by protein (membrane-receptor) hormones,

∴ steroid hormones act by binding to DNA and forming a gene-hormone complex.
